In Macedonia, the majority of the population follows the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith, and Christmas is celebrated according to the Julian calendar, which places Christmas Day on January 7th. The Orthodox Christmas traditions in Macedonia are deeply rooted in religious customs and local cultural practices.

On the evening before Christmas, there's a gathering in every neighbourhood. A fire is lit, food is shared and the warm rakija flows freely.
